We would like to respond to the recent review in this Journal of our book, Teaching and Learning Pragmatics: Where Language and Culture Meet (Longman Applied Linguistics/Pearson Education 2010) by Peter Grundy (Grundy 2012). We welcome his keen interest in our volume and are pleased with the attention that instructional pragmatics is getting since constructive arguments in this area can help to raise the profile that pragmatics receives both in teacher education and in L2 curriculum. Grundy’s review clearly delineates the differences between a conventional ‘hierarchical’ pedagogy based on native-speaker norms and an alternative ‘levelled’ approach for English as a lingua franca.
